The next day, after afternoon excursions to cool off in the water (Gilles took the more adventurous souls to a series of natural pools and waterfall slides deep in a canyon,
while I headed to a shady glen along the creek with a pack of parents and tots), the festivities continued at the bread oven in the heart of our hamlet.
This little oven had long been fireless, and the dream of firing it up again was an old one in the hamlet... So this was our chance, and it was a fabulous team effort. Early in the week Gilles and our closest neighbors started slowly warming it with daily fires. Gilles fashioned an oven peel (see top photo, against the oven wall), and on the big day, there was a roaring fire in the oven throughout the afternoon, until the blackened inner bricks turned red and finally white... Up top, there's Alex serving delicious glasses of Pims with strawberries, orange, lemon, cucumber and fresh mint. Mmmmm.
