Köln and the Rhineland

After the holidays, we all jumped in the train and headed to Germany to feast on blintzes and little breads and visit with my old college roommate - Lynette. Here we are visiting the dragon's castle in a foresty area near Köln, along the Rhine. We hiked a little, and ate a lot at the very inviting "Milk Hut" where mounds of thick whipped cream come with almost everything.

Köln has a renowned zoo where we spent one afternoon. The animals looked happy and well-adpated. The elephants were amazing - while the adults munched on apples and large tubers, the kid elephants played "soccer" with a foam ball. I had never seen a giraffe before - so graceful and friendly. One licked a man on the face and gave C little smooch. L wanted a giraffe kiss more than anything, but I was a little wary of letting her get too close, which she's still mad at me about.
