april fools' day

In France, it's called "Poissons d'avril" (April Fish Day) and along with the usual sort of April 1st pranks, kids cut out colored paper fish which they stick on people's backs. Last night, Camille and Louise busily prepared a stock of fish for school today, and my back was virtually plastered with them at my English lessons this afternoon. Anyway, this occasion led me and Gilles to think of some of our projects gone awry of late, "pranks" if you will that life played on us, or that we played on life as the case may be. Such as the sad end to the tadpoles when, after a week or so of observing their metamorphosis, we figured we should change the water (thermal shock??).
Or the "sirop de violette" which ended up the perfect colour of... swamp water. We spent an afternoon wildcrafting violets with the girls and got a lovely purple infusion, such a pretty color. The only sugar on hand was a pale brown I keep in large quantities, so in it went, and there went the lovely violet hue. Gone, gone, gone. Luckily we do have some of the sort of friends you can serve swamp-coloured violet-flavoured syrup to on a hot summer day, and they're even happy about it. Better luck next year. Happy April Fools!
